How Ultra-Fresh Works

Ultra-Fresh is a family of 25 different treatments formulated to give different kinds of antimicrobial protection to a wide variety of substrates. These treatments are based on 9 different active ingredients each of which acts in a different way to control bacteria and fungi.

Our treatments are biostatic. They control the reproduction of bacteria and fungi so that they do not grow and thrive.
Our treatments are not biocidal. They do not kill the organisms. Our products are not sterilants or disinfectants.
The properties that we are trying to control, such as odors and staining, are caused by the rapid growth of microorganisms. If we can stop that growth we can prevent the unwanted effects.

An example

Some of our products contain silver as an active ingredient.
Silver works in three different ways on a bacterial cell;

  1. reacts with proteins and enzymes inside the cell to disrupt the processes which convert food into energy
  2. reacts with the cell wall, making it weaker so that it can break more easily
  3. reacts with RNA and DNA strands in the cell to prevent reproduction

Having three different modes of action means that silver is a very efficient antimicrobial. It also means that it is very hard for organisms to develop resistance. Silver remains effective even after long term use.
